1937 Derby Bentley 4.25 Park Ward Sports Saloon
Chassis number: B71KU
Registration Number: ELR493
Registered in September of 1937, This 4.25 litre Derby Bentley was first owned by a firm of London Solicitors; James Ferguson & Sons. The chain of ownership is known from then right up to the present day & includes Battle of Britain actor Sir Ralph Richardson, a painting of whom comes with the car.
A recent front suspension overhaul costing over £8,000 has been carried out to ensure she rides beautifully on the road. A previous owner of some two decades undertook a massive restoration upon the car to put it in the condition we find it in today. This included a full engine rebuild with a modern oil filter being added to the car.
You really have to drive this car to appreciate just how strong the engine is. Oil pressure is off the dial to start but settles to a very healthy 29lbs when fully warmed & under load. Water temperature runs in the High 60's rising to low 70's in heavy traffic. The engine is crisp, strong & befits the monniker "The silent Sports Car". Without doubt this is one of the fastest standard Derbies I have driven with a really remarkable turn of speed when pushed hard, yet utterly docile on back roads. wafting along in top gear.
The car comes to us with a plethora of receipts contained within no less then 4 separate history folders. Far too numerous to photograph in their entirety, suffice to say they are voluminous.
Coach work is by Park Ward & is particularly pretty in Primrose yellow as a secondary colour to the Masons Black. The paint is in very good order thoughout drawing admiring glances wherever the car is seen. The yellow extends to centres of the Ace wheel discs giving the car a super smart appearance. Brightwork, likewise has been rechromed giving the car a beautiful frontal appearance; the headlamps being augmented by a centrally mounted spot lamp. A large sunroof slides easily open allowing for pleasant summer motoring.
To the interior is stone coloured leather in really good order along with matching carpets. All interior woodwork has been removed & refinished, the better to show off the fine patterns to the burr Walnut.
All in all this is an exceptional driving derby with a real turn of speed to it excellent brakes & a wonderful history file from all the right people including Fiennes, Ristes & RR&B Garages. It is way way above average compared to many we see & really wants for nothing other then regular use. A good assortment of tools & spares are found in the clam shell style boot. The rear mounted spare sits within its painted aluminium cover, agian picked out in Primrose yellow.
