1924 Maharajah of Mysore Rolls Royce Silver Ghost with body by Steuarts of Calcutta.

Chassis number: 82EU

Engine Number: U176

Registration number: R2509 (Early Derby Number.)

A fascinating car with a fascinating history.  82EU was originally sold to Barkers who bodied the car for the first owner one Benjamin Sassoon of 19 St James Sq London.  The car was signed off by Eric Platford on November 29th of 1924 & delivered on January 20th 1925.  Thus being a late car it benefits from 4 wheel brakes & Autovac fed fuel.

The body the car currently wears is an original open drive  body  built by Steuarts of Calcutta in 1914 for the Maharajah of Mysore.  This in turn was a copy of a body built by Barkers in 1913 displayed at Olympia on chassis number 2366.   The Steuarts body was imported from India in 1967.  This car is the lifes work of noted Rolls-Royce luminary & enthusiast the late Mr Tony James.  It was he who sourced both the chassis & body (From James Black) & married the two together.  A photograph of the body on the previous chassis comes with the car taken by Lake Dhakhuria in 1965.

The attention to detail is extraordinary.  We will be photographing it in detail in the next few weeks. The car is currently at Marque specialists Ristes of Nottingham having a full service perfomed & complete tune up after standing for a couple of years whilst being only intermittently run.  We have put a dozen or so pre service miles on it & can attest to the silent powerful engine & excellent 4 wheel brakes.   This is indeed a car that needs & wants for nothing.

The Late Mr James kept meticulous records of all that was done to the car right down to fabricating new undertrays to make the car "Right."  The records come with the car minutely detailing the extensive works undertaken to it & also the vast expenditure including a full & thorough rebuild of all things mechanical on the car.

The paint is royal blue over black in perfect condition with the bonnet left in polished aluminium.  A photograph of the unpainted body comes with the car showing it as found & installed.  To the drivers quarters is black leather with original seat backs & re-leathered seat squab.  An Aluminium dash with the requisite instruments completes the ensemble. Full photographs of the delightfully appointed rear quarters will follow soon.

This is a supremely elegant car with very very desirable Indian Coachwork.  It drives beautifully & wants for nothing having done few miles since restoration.  Silver Ghost motoring at its finest indeed.  The car is of sufficient importance to have graced the RREC Stand at the NEC classic car show a few years ago.  It is ready for long distance rallies & is a car I would not hesitate to drive the length of Europe in.
