1932 MG D-type Midget Salonette
Chassis number: D0407
Registration Number: PJ7527
An absolutely unique 1932 MG D-type Midget Salonette (Reg P37527) 4-seater In glorious Cambridge and Oxford duo blues; number D0407 (Triple-M register #393) has the longer chassis similar to the C and 3-types. Was sold by Jarvis, Wimbledon In early 1932
The only known (according to D-group register) remaining D-type Salonette In the world; bought in 2005 the project to reconstruct the Salonette body started. All new leather upholstery sourced, assembled and made by expert Dave Beswick in Derby, with period tight-knit Jaguar carpet fitted throughout.
The D-type comes with its original 4-cylinder engine fully crack tested (668 AD) totally rebuilt/reassembled by local expert with balance/checked crank (honed by 3EL Bearings, York) all new white-metal bearings. New AA Bayton Jones camshaft. Fitted with the original and fully serviced Adamant steering box.
This D-type comes with its original and very rare 3-speed special gearbox and remote. The original, rare and beautiful Rotax K624 headlamps have been sympathetically restored, along with the SU Petrolift pump. D0407 has its original Lucas CFJ2 cut-out box and extremely rare Maltese-X oil pressure gauge.
All new and closely replicated English walnut dashboard and door capping's. The body has been rebuilt by Dave Earp (Derby) over a two-year period. All mature English ash from Somerset being used. The Cathedral window Sunroof opens easily & makes the cockpit a light & airy place to spend time in.
Ash body fully re-skinned in aluminium by Peter Powell, Derby. Painted in 2-pac by Geoff Voce, Mansfield. The radiator has been cored with the original MG hexagonal type. Fully rebuilt 1 1/8" SU brass carburettor; reconditioned starter motor and dynamos fully serviced by Chris Wallis; proper Smiths PN speedo rebuilt by Speedograph, Notts.
All new leather upholstery sourced, assembled to correct patterns and made by expert Dave Beswick in Derby, with period tight-knit Jaguar carpet fitted throughout. Complete set of five new Blockley 400x19 tyres on fully refurbished outer-laced silver wheels. All fully serviced and original 8" brakes.
The majority of body panels are original & restored. 90-year old parts like doors, bonnet, petrol tank, engine-valances and front apron. The MG has a brand-new wiring loom fitted matched to the original type and to Include Indicators. It has no modifications like diodes and/or electronics, but it does have 90% LED bulbs.
This MG has been rebuilt to look and drive like it did when new. It has now covered over 100 miles this year since the rebuild so things are settling down and being tightened where need be; these are living cars for us to enjoy and treat now and again.
This D-type is the only know Salonette in existence, so this is the opportunity to acquire a very special pre-war MG into a collection, use at shows and of course drive for the sheer pleasure. It really is a little Jewel of a car & surprisingly is a 4 seater; albeit one best suited to children in the rear. The atteniton to correct detail is fantastic with the car being absolutley correct to original specification.
