2017 Range Rover Velar
Launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show following great anticipation, the Velar is the latest model in the Range Rover line-up. Its name ‘Velar’, meaning ‘veiled’ or ‘covered’ in Italian, harks back to 1969 when it was bestowed upon the prototypes for British Leyland’s upcoming Range Rover in a sneaky attempt to fool pesky investigative automotive journalists. JLR’s decision to reuse the name for this sleek new automobile is a fitting celebration to a very momentous, yet wonderfully witty, occasion in the brand’s vibrant history.
In terms of new technology, JLR has not held back. In lieu of out-dated buttons, the Velar has a very smart 10-inch high-definition infotainment touchscreen system on the dashboard, ‘hidden-until-lit’ switches presented on the steering wheel, an innovative head-up display system on the windscreen, climate-controlled front seats with body-shape memory, mood lighting, and the option of 8-inch touchscreens on the back of the front passenger and driver seats. But perhaps the icing on the technological cake is the Velar’s “multi-function remote” smartphone/smart-watch app which allows the owner to pre-condition the interior’s climate, lock/unlock and locate the car!
Performance is far from disappointing too, with the supercharged 375bhp petrol V6 achieving 60mph in just 5.3 seconds!
We have two Velars on the way, one 2.0 I4 diesel using JLR’s new highly efficient Ingenium 4-cylinder engine, and one high-performance 3.0 Supercharged V6 petrol.
Prices for these two cars have yet to be confirmed, but potential customers can expect list price + premium.
